Wreck Dives-C-55 JUAN DE LA BARRERA
C-55 JUAN DE LA BARRERA
In October of 2000, the Mexican Navy Vessel C-55 Juan de la Barrera was sunk intentionally outside of Cancun for the purpose of attracting more marine life and to serve the current eco-system. Since the vessel had been decommissioned, it wouldn’t be a huge loss and in fact could be beneficial even for diving purposes since the wreck is located in 75’ of water. The plan worked very well up until the 5th anniversary of the vessels sinking when Hurricane Wilma hit the waters of Cancun nearly destroying the wreck leaving the back deck still in tack. Today the wreck is still a great dive and perhaps even better than had been anticipated with the migration of Nurse Sharks, Spotted Eagle Rays, Eels, Barracudas, Groupers, Jacks, Sardines and various other sea life that have now made the wreck their home. This is a great dive for certified divers.
